Mathematics Invitational Tournament
at the University of Richmond

On February 25, 1984 Handley was invited to compete

against the best math teams in the state at the Mathematics

Invitational Tournament held at the Collegiate Schools in

Richmond. Handley's team of DiFei Chuang, Greg Palmer, and

Mark Rice competed against nineteen other schools, including

W. T. Woodson, McLean, Charlottesville, Harrisonburg,

Woodberry Forest, and others. Handley placed fourteenth as

a team, and DiFei Chuang and Greg Palmer placed 22nd

individually out of 61 students.

The contest consisted of four parts - the power question,

team questions, relays, and individual questions. Scores from

the four parts were added together for the composite score.

One of the purposes of this contest was to select a state team

from Virginia to compete in the Atlantic Regional Math League

Contest. Fairfax County decided to send its own team (as it

had done for years), so both DiFei Chuang and Greg Palmer were

selected to the fifteen member Virginia Team. But some

members decided not to compete and the Virginia Team did not

go to the A.R.M.L. However, Greg and DiFei were able to

compete with the Fairfax County Team that year in the

A.R.M.L. at Penn State.
