The purpose of MATHO is to introduce students to each other and to promote critical thinking skills.   For example, a good critical thinking skill is to read to get a good overview and then develop a plan.   Stragies in playing the game can be related to those used in taking a test.   Do the easy ones first and save the more difficult ones for later.

Students find that matching the same three numbers on a license plate or matching the middle numbers of a social security number is not as easy as matching one number with a single digit answer.

MATHO is similar to BINGO.   It can be adapted for use at any grade level by changing the questions.   MATHO will break the ice so that students can see what they have in common with other students.   MATHO can also help relieve some of their anxieties.
