Mr. P has six pieces of chain of five links each, which he wants to have made into a necklace of thirty links for his wife.
If it costs eight cents to cut a link open and eighteen cents to weld it together again, how much would it cost to make the necklace?
Remember that Mr. P is a cheapskate and he wants to do this in the least expensive way.

Solution to the Problem:

The answer is $1.30.

The least expensive way to make the necklace out of the six five-link pieces is to open up all five links of one piece, then use them for joining the remaining five pieces into the necklace.   The cost for cutting five links is 40 cents and the cost of welding them back together is 90 cents.
