Square Root Problem

What does the following expression equal?



Show your work.

Solution:

= 3


Let x =

Then x² = 6 +

So x² = 6 + x

x² - x - 6 = 0

(x - 3) (x + 2) = 0

x = 3, -2

But x cannot be negative, so the only answer is x = 3.
