Every year from 1968 until 1999, I posed the following challenge to my students:

Write expressions for all the numbers from 1 to 100 using only the digits in the current year in order and using the operations +, -, x, ÷ , ^ (raised to a power), sqrt (square root), ! (factorial), and [ ] (greatest integer function), along with grouping symbols.

I presented the problem before the winter vacation, and many of my students would return in January with expressions completed for most of the numbers (and some had finished all of them!).
Brooks Garris from Lake View, South Carolina wrote in that he had his students try this puzzle with their birth years from 1996 to 2000.
