The American High School Mathematics Examination 
has been given annually since March 1950.  It is 
sponsored jointly by the Mathematical Association 
of America, the National Council of Teachers of 
Mathematics, Mu Alpha Theta, the American 
Mathematical Society, and other organizations.

     The contest, which is administered to more 
than 300,000 students nationwide, consists of 30 
multiple choice questions.  The scoring system has 
changed over the years.  Currently, a student 
receives 5 points for each correct answer and 2 points 
for each unanswered question - to eliminate random 
guessing. 

     To be listed on the Student Honor Roll, one must 
attain a score of 100 or better.  The Student Merit 
Roll is for students in grades 10 or less, with a score 
of 90 or above.  The School Honor Roll includes schools 
whose team score (the sum of the top three individual 
scores) is 350 or more.  

     The School Merit Roll includes all schools whose 
team score is 280 or better.  For contests before 1986, 
a student needed a score of 95 or better to be listed on 
the Student Honor Roll (the contest was scored differently 
-- 4 points for each correct answer and 1 point for each
unanswered question).
