Square Problem



The figure below is composed of congruent squares.

If the number of centimeters in the perimeter of the figure is numerically equal to the number of square centimeters in the area, what is the measure of one side of one of the congruent squares?






Solution to the Problem:

Each side of one of the congruent squares measures 2 cm.

Let x = length of one of the sides.
The perimeter of the figure = 14x.
The area of the figure is 7x2
Set these equal: 14x = 7x2 and solve.
x = 0, 2
