Max -- A Two Player Game
by Charles Weaver in
Games Magazine April 1994

Your goal is to accumulate a higher point total than your opponent after two rounds of play.   To play round one, choose which player will take rows and which player will take columns.   The row player goes first by crossing out any number from the row containing the Happy Face.   The column player then crosses out any number in the column containing the first player's previous move.   The round ends when one of the players cannot make a legal move.

On each turn, the number a player crosses out is added to that player's score.   For round two, the players switch roles (ROW and COLUMN), and play proceeds.   After 2 rounds, the player with the higher score wins.
